If it doesn't make you money, we won't teach it. / by sal misseri

I saw it because I was working heavily in the industry and doing a lot of competition work. When I was up for different awards, I'd run into established hairdressers, and a lot of them gatekept everything they were doing.

They wouldn't share their techniques. Or they'd pretend those techniques were very hard to do, when most of them were very simple. They didn't want to teach, and they didn't want to share. They made you believe you could never achieve it.

So we flipped it

Anything I do, I try to break down into its simplest form. Make it easy to understand, easy to digest, and turn it into something that can make hairdressers money right away.

If it doesn't make you money, we won't teach it.

That isn't about being cold. It's about respect. When a stylist pays for education, they're paying with money they earned behind the chair and with a day they didn't book clients. If what they learn can't come back into their salon and earn, I've wasted their time.

Simple is not the same as basic

People sometimes hear "simple" and think "beginner." That's not what I mean.

There's nothing advanced about anything we do. It's just an advanced way of combining simple techniques.

The individual pieces are simple. The skill is in knowing which pieces to combine, in what order, for which person. That's where the artistry lives. Not in making things sound impossible.

A lot of education gets sold by making things complicated. If a technique sounds hard, the class sounds valuable. I'd rather you leave thinking, "How did I not see this before?" That reaction is the whole point.

What that looks like in practice

Every class we build starts with the same question: how does this help a hairdresser earn? Sometimes that's a faster service. Sometimes it's a better consultation that books the next appointment. Sometimes it's a result that lasts longer, so the client trusts you with more.

If it can't answer that question, it doesn't make the curriculum.
